(2024/03/10): This piece of advice for ICs (Individual Contributors) still applies. Having a short list of topics can focus a 1-on-1 towards a particular tactical issue or for a strategic discussion. As an engineering manager, I appreciated it whenever my reports would bring a topic to the 1-on-1, whether it was a technical topic or a career or mentorship topic.
